Reflective Essay

Personal Qualities, Work Habits, and Attitudes

Throughout my highschool years, I have displayed responsibility and a strong sense of self management on multiple occasions. The first example that comes to mind is how I started high school with lackluster grades but as I have grown as a person my mentality towards school and grades have completely changed. I ended freshman year with mostly B’s and C’s and knew I had to do better. From that year on I took the responsibility of my grades into my own hands and vowed to do better. Next year I ended with B’s and A’s and while it was an improvement, I wasn't entirely happy. Junior year I really stepped up my game and ended the year with all A’s. I did this all myself with no outside help and it truly displays the strong sense of responsibility I have developed over my 3 years of highschool. I have also shown self management throughout highschool. The biggest indication of this was during sophomore year when I wasn't happy with myself and the way I looked. Instead of moping around feeling sorry for myself I went to the gym to better myself. A year and a half later I lost over 90 pounds and gained muscle and confidence in myself and have never felt better. My character aspects of responsibility and self management have made me a stronger, faster, and smarter person.

New Basic

One of the most important skills to pick up throughout school is a good understanding and ability to read and write. Now, when I was younger I’m not going to lie and tell you my reading aptitude was very impressive, in fact it was quite the opposite. But to correct this I was enrolled in reading classes and as a result I’ve always been one of the best readers in class ever since. I don’t remember a lot from that class since I was fairly young but apparently it did teach me a lot about reading and really helped improve my skills. As for writing I’ve never had many problems with it and over the years I’ve picked up some things but still have a lot to learn. As long as I can remember I’ve been writing essays in school and it's instilled in me a strong sense of how essays are formatted and how they’re supposed to be written. I have the template in my mind from doing multiple of them and am confident that I can write an adequate essay on any topic without much guidance. Another skill I have developed since being a little kid is my strong urge to keep in shape and maintain proper hygiene. As a child I didn't really see the point of keeping good hygiene but now I realize I couldn't have been more wrong. Now showers, shaving, applying deodorant, clipping nails, and many other activities such as that are a daily routine for me now. Also keeping in shape has been more difficult with the pandemic and gyms being closed but I’ve still managed to lose weight and get healthier in these troubling times. Things I do to do this include lifting weights, doing push ups and pull ups, and lastly getting some time in on a punching bag are all regular activities I do to maintain my health. Like all people, I have grown exponentially since being a kid and some of my biggest areas of growth are my reading skills and my good sense of hygiene and ability to stay in shape.

Thinking and Reasoning Skills

If I didn't have any thinking or reasoning skills I don’t think I would’ve made it as far as I did. I think schools in general ingrain these types of problem solving, decision making, and reasoning skills that we need later in life. An example of this is how we all get assignments from different classes but we have to prioritize which one is most important and which one to do first. That's why I always sit down and break apart my homework into little chunks rather than overwhelm myself trying to do it all. This system has worked very well for me as I never miss an assignment for my big classes. I believe this shows my thinking and reasoning skills because I do have a problem to solve with a lot of homework and my problem solving and decision making skills help me resolve this problem. My reasoning has to decide which assignment is the most significant and by doing that I can keep on top of my homework. This system is something I had to learn and develop over time as I am typically a bad procrastinator and this is the best way of doing my homework to get it in on time.

Intrapersonal Abilities

Something else my time at ACLC has taught me is how to work in a group of diverse backgrounds. We have all kinds of different people with different opinions, genders, races, and religions and I’ve never had a problem with working with any of them. I am personally an opinionated person but I never let those get in the way of working well with others. I also never disrespect another person for their opinions or way of living even if I disagree with them. On top of working well with others I’m also not adverse to helping others. On multiple occasions my piers needed help with their assignments which I was glad to help with. Even though I’m not the smartest or best at any given topic I’ll always try to help others struggling with it because it's what I’d want them to do if I was having a hard time. Academics aren't the only thing I teach others as I also help out my friends with work out advice. For example some of my friends are just starting to exercise and I always try to provide them with the knowledge I have acquired from working out for over a year now. It may be advice for a certain technique they may be performing incorrectly or how much and how frequent to do a certain exercise. To wrap it up my time at ACLC has imbued me with an urge to help others when they need it despite who that person is and what they believe in.

Technology

Another strength of mine is my grasp of technology. I grew up with all sorts of technology such as phones, tablets, computers, laptops, gaming devices, among many others. This has endowed me with a good understanding of a wide variety of tech and an ability to quickly pick up and learn how to use it. I know my way around a phone or computer and am always the go to man when problems arise in my household with tech. This also means I’m always the one that has to set up TV’s, gaming consoles, and DVR’s which has given me a good understanding of the cabling that goes into setting these devices up. While I have a good knowledge of the externals of technology I am also striving to learn how the intervals of them work. As a result I am taking coding classes to even better understand technology and how it works. These skills I have picked up over time will serve me exponentially later in life as technology continues to evolve and my knowledge with it.
